The £1 Story

1) A Tale of £1.

Jonothan Bosworth Recruitment Specialists has built a reputation for placing the right candidates in the right roles, with the right employers for well over a decade. But one morning, back in 2018, we made an announcement that would confuse and excite some of our existing client-partners in equal measure!

What we decided to do was "offer our existing client-partners something no other recruitment agency would even dream of, and that was for the next hire, we'd only charge £1."

The email and communication went out to a select number of decision makers, and with the knowledge that the typical recruitment fee for a position with an average salary was around £8,000 – we knew that the questions would pour in! This offer was unheard of, almost ludicrous. But as we explained the strategy, excitement began to build.

"We won't just be giving away our services. This £1 offer comes with a condition. For the next 12 months, we'll have first refusal on all job vacancies from participating employers. It’s a small investment with potentially huge benefits for all parties involved."


2) The Ripple Effect.

The offer was quickly communicated. Emails were sent, phone calls were made, and soon the word was spreading.

For many, the timing couldn't have been better. The thought of saving on both internal resources and external fees for the next hire was too good to pass up. It wasn't just about the £1 fee; it was about the broader impact on hiring strategies.

Typically, recruitment is a ‘reactive’ process. Roles become vacant, and only then did the hiring process begin, often in a rush and under pressure. But now, our employer-partners were thinking ahead, months in advance.

3) Why It Worked.

No Need for Internal Resources: Dedicating time and effort from HR departments to manage the recruitment process wasn’t necessary. We’d do the advertising, sifting through applications, conducting initial interviews, and more. Outsourced recruitment - effectively for FREE. HR teams were able to focus on strategic initiatives, knowing that their next key hire was already being handled by trusted professionals.

No External Fees: An £8,000 hit to the budget for every new hire can add up quickly, especially for companies with frequent turnover or expansion plans. The prospect of saving this expense, even just once, was enough to make many decision-makers reconsider their hiring timelines.


4) The Early Bird Advantage.

As the weeks passed, a clear pattern began to emerge. Waiting for positions to open up to start thinking about recruitment was no longer happening. Instead, we were part of a proactive plan.

The gamble paid off. ‘The £1 offer’ had initially raised eyebrows, but it quickly became clear that the long-term benefits far outweighed any scepticism. With ‘first refusal’ on all job vacancies for the next year, Jonothan Bosworth found itself with a steady stream of roles to fulfil, securing its place as the go-to recruiter for these companies, (up until the pandemic in 2020).

Clients, in turn, appreciated the forward-thinking approach and the security of having a trusted partner ready to step in whenever needed. The £1 hire became more than just a good deal - it became a ‘symbol’ of the strong, collaborative relationships built.


6) The Legacy of the £1 Hire.

As the 12-month period ended, what started as a ‘bold marketing’ move had evolved into a deeper, more strategic partnership. Some of those same hiring managers have since moved to new employers and have recently reached out to us again.

In the end, the £1 hire was much more than a discounted service; it was a ‘catalyst for change’, driving efficiency, foresight, and collaboration across the board. And in the ever-competitive recruitment industry, it was proof that sometimes, ‘thinking outside the box’ can yield extraordinary results.
